We’ve detoxed our deodorant, our skincare routine, our nail care and our sunscreen. What’s left? Natural hair care. Turns out, our strands get just as stressed as our skin when they come into contact with scary chemicals. To learn more, we turned to the experts behind some of the best detoxed hair care products on the market.
Why is Natural Hair Care So Important?
For starters, keep in mind that whatever you put on your skin is absorbed directly into your bloodstream.
“Approximately 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed directly into our bloodstream,” says Joy McCarthy of Joyous Health. “When making the switch to natural hair care, you’ll not only notice a huge transformation in the health of your hair, but you’ll also experience the many benefits that come with ridding toxic chemicals from your lifestyle and lowering your toxic load as a whole.”
Similarly important to note? The chemicals in your products may have ramifications on the environment as well.
“Synthetic ingredients from hair products… can contaminate rivers, lakes, and the air, and with dire consequences,” Fabian Lliguin, Founder of Rahua, tells us. “If a natural ingredient is no longer needed by the hair or scalp, it will be rejected and will go back to the environment with zero contamination.”
Some of our Favorite Natural Hair Care Products:
Joyous Health Natural Shampoo & Conditioner – Joy McCarthy, Founder
We love that your products are infused with lavender!
In both the Natural Shampoo and Conditioner, organic lavender extract helps to promote hair growth, prevent dry itchy scalp and manage hair conditions such as dandruff and hair loss. It also smells AMAZING! Lavender as an essential oil has calming properties too.
What inspired you to make a shampoo and conditioner?
I was inspired to come out with my own line of Natural Shampoo and Conditioner because I wanted to provide my community with haircare products they can trust that are paraben-free, phthalate-free, SLS-free and synthetic fragrance-free while being affordable and effective.
Innersense Organic Beauty – Joanne Starkman, Co-Founder
Your shampoo utilizes coconut as the cleansing ingredient – what is it about coconut that removes dirt/product build-up from the hair?
Coconut acts as a natural surfactant and creates lather that breaks up the sebum and oils on the hair and scalp, leaving the hair clean and moisturized. We often combine coconut with tamanu oil in our products. Tamanu has been a sacred healing oil for centuries and it has amazing anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and skin rejuvenating properties. Together the two deliver the deep but weightless hydration we’re known for.
Can you tell us about why flax is good for the hair/scalp?
Flax seed oil is a wonderful source of protein and has a super high Omega 3 content; those fatty acids prevent dry, flaky scalp and may even reduce eczema, inflammation and other skin conditions. As hair is made of protein, those omegas nourish hair follicles and encourage healthy, new growth. We love to formulate with flax because it revives lackluster, brittle hair and increases elasticity. The end result is stronger hair that helps withstand the environment and heat styling.”
Rahua – Fabian Lliguin, Founder
What are the properties of Rahua oil that make it so incredibly moisturizing? How does it differ from, say, argan oil?
Rahua oil has very small Omega 9 molecules that penetrate deep into the hair, repairing and rebuilding the hair. Most oils and/or synthetics’ molecules are larger in size which sit on the surface of hair, doing only a temporary cosmetic job, and they will disappear on the next shampoo.
Tell us about the decision to include Palo Santo – is this more about cleansing negative energy or does it also have an impact on the scalp and hair?
The Palo Santo scent is very exotic and has been liked by many people for centuries as a spiritual incense. It also is has very important antibacterial and antifungal properties which prevent and cure the scalp from bacteria or fungi, eliminating dandruff, dry scalp or any other maladies from affecting the hair and/or the scalp.
Graydon Skincare – Graydon Moffat, Chief Idea Officer
Why is natural haircare important?
My hair over the last 15 years was getting thinner and more sparse – that was terrifying and caused me a lot of stress and anxiety. I tried every drugstore product I could get my hands on but nothing helped. It was until I started using more natural ingredients that my hair began to feel stronger and more healthy. Your hair is a manifestation of everything else that is happening in your body.
Why matcha in the Graydon Skincare line shampoo?
When we started doing the research we realized that matcha is actually genuinely good for your hair, not just your skin.
Ivy Phung, Graydon’s Product Development manager who has a degree in cosmetic science, had more to add: “Matcha contains a lot of antioxidants, which can help with hair loss in general, and it helps to preserve the follicle and prevent it from falling out. It is also a source of panthenol.”
