If you’re like us and can’t bear a day without getting zen or bendy, let us introduce you to your new favorite company, Love My Mat.
The company started in 2008 with just one product, a yoga mat cleaner (made from just four ingredients: USDA certified organic citrus extract, lavender, tea tree, and water). Since then, they’ve expanded significantly. Think limited-availability geometric and floral patterns on bolsters, cushions, yoga bags, straps, sandbags, hand weights, and eye pillows, each with their own unique names.
We caught up with one half of the founding team, Shelley Gordon, who told us a bit more about the company.
On Sourcing those Gorgeous Fabrics:
Finding fabrics is the best part. My mom and I love thrift shopping and do it several times weekly. We just go to any Value Villages, Talize, Bibles for Missions or other thrift shops and root through items finding the perfect pieces to turn into beautiful props.
Often I will choose based on the energy a fabric holds. So if something doesn’t exactly catch my eye right away but makes me feel good when I touch it, I’ll buy it because I know someone will connect with it as I did. And sometimes I find gorgeous fabrics with such negative energy that I have to pass them by.
On Her Own Practice (and Her Mom’s):
My yoga practice started as a physical workout (as most do) but has since shifted to a practice of self-realization. I still love a good fast flow class, but really enjoy teaching and practicing fundamentals.
My meditation practice is always evolving. Currently I practice Japa Meditation with a mala. Much like how a rosary works, I repeat my mantra as I thumb through each of the 108 beads on my mala. But I do love to just sit on my meditation cushion for 10-15 minutes observing my breath and thoughts. When I started meditating for longer periods, I knew I needed a Zabuton. So that’s why we started making them.
My mom doesn’t do much yoga; she prefers to bike and walk. She has recently started her own meditation practice. She enjoys counting her breaths to stay present or relaxing her body part by part. My mom’s hips are tighter than mine, so we’re currently working on creating another size and shape meditation cushion to support her and more people.
On What’s Exciting Her Most About the Canadian/Ontario Wellness Scene:
I love that Meditation Spaces are starting to pop up and that yoga studios are starting to offer meditation classes. As someone who needs meditation, it’s nice to know that I can do it in a group setting. We are also seeing more Meditation Teacher Trainings available, which is awesome!
We love that people are into restorative yoga more and more. In our busy lives we have such a need to slow down and people are starting to listen to their bodies now.
And that colleges and institutes are starting to get on the health and wellness train. Humber College now offers Wellness Coaching Program. And Mohawk College has added Health and Wellness training to their fitness programs.
As a society we are shifting our perspective to live mindfully of ourselves, others and the planet. We are excited to be part of this movement and can’t wait to see where it takes us.
Up next for Love My Mat are a new design for the Mediation Cushions, a smaller version of the Prana Bolster, and another project they’re keeping under wraps for now.
