They call it Studio Lagree. I call it evidence that, even though I thought I was in shape, apparently I am not. Honestly, I have been wanting to try Studio Lagree for a while. Everywhere I go, it seems like someone is talking about it. My colleagues are getting on board. My friends are signing-up. Even the running shoe sales guy who convinced me to buy not one but two pairs of running shoes was jumping on the Studio Lagree bandwagon. It’s got a definite buzz going on.
So, on a bright Saturday afternoon, I met up with Eme (who had already been to a Studio Lagree class, and raved about it) to see for myself what everyone is talking about. We headed to Studio Lagree on King West, a loft-like space shared with Studio KO. Jeffrey, our instructor, went over the machine with “first timer” me and then we got straight to work. And let me just say that it was one of the most difficult workouts of my life. But incredible. In 50 minutes, I worked my entire body through a series of moves done by sliding, pulling, piking, pushing and holding on Lagree’s M3 Megaformer (think of a high octane version of the traditional Pilates reformer). And I sweat, oh, how I sweat (note to self, bring a towel next time – the sweat made some of the moves a little precarious as I slipped and slid on the M3 Megaformer). Jeffrey’s class was intense, but he was great at cuing and adjusting form…not to mention his fab music selection. Ever heard of the term “gut buster”? I think that I would not be off-base to describe my first Lagree experience as one of those.
1. I think it would be very difficult to do a Lagree class if you don’t at least have a base level of cardio fitness and muscular strength. But if you have a base, and want to take it to the next level, Lagree will (pardon my French) kick your ass…in a good way.
2. If you are competitive and used to being the best in your workout classes, you will probably not be that person when you start Lagree…but talk about motivation, right?!
3. You will get into your core like no one’s business. I am on day three of ab soreness. And, I’m not going to lie, it hurts to laugh, although less so than yesterday.
4. I’m already signed-up for my next class. So see you on the M3 Megaformer!
