We decided to give a juice cleanse from one of Toronto’s newest juice kids on the block, ELXR Juice Lab, a try. Here’s what we thought:
Ah, the juice cleanse. A topic of much controversy – some people hate them, some people swear by them. While I’m a huge juice lover (bring on the green juice!), I generally tend to think that if you maintain a balanced diet, you shouldn’t really need to “cleanse,” per se. That being said, we’ve all had those days, weekends or weeks (or months, eep!) where that nutrition thing is just not happening – cue indulgence of choice (chips, chocolate, wine, fries, all of the above…) and before you know it, you’re “off the wagon,” so to speak. All of a sudden, your pants seem to have shrunk, the pep in your step is not quite so peppy and, dare I say, the appearance of pimples on your face is way too reminiscent of junior high school days. Le sigh. When that happens, sometimes a juice cleanse is just what is needed for a reset.
I also love explore new options in cleansing. So when we discovered the latest juice Toronto juice company ELXR Juice Lab, I was particularly excited to try it out. First, let me just say that the aesthetic is awesome. The bottle design is tres chic and I love the tongue and cheek(y) names like First Base, Second Base and After Party.
Speaking of After Party, this is seriously one of the coolest juices that I have ever tasted. A combination of alkaline water, lemon, maple syrup and activated charcoal, it is designed to provide you with a whole body detoxification and liver support. ELXR also specifically touts it as a hangover remedy – time to stock up for the holiday party season, anyone? Besides After Party, I also particularly enjoyed the fact that there were two shots included in my cleanse kit – Defender (lemon, ginger, oregano oil and nettle), which is anti-viral and supports anti-inflammation, immunity and hair growth, and Immune Boost (turmeric, chaga and reishi), which also supports anti-inflammation and immunity, as well as cholesterol reduction.
While the delivery schedules still leaves a little something to be desired (currently they only have limited delivery windows during working hours), this new kid on the juice block definitely has a lot of potential. – Erin
As a much more reluctant cleanser, I found my two days of the ELXR cleanse quite painful, but brightened not only by the After Party, but also by the revelation that the mainstay green juice, First Base, of which I had to drink four, was actually very flavorful and delicious. A great mix of cucumber, spinach and mint, any potentially harsh or unpleasant flavors were cut nicely by some crisp (I swear, I could hear that crunch as you bite down) granny smith apple.
I had the pleasure of meeting the founder of ELXR at a boxing class that I ill-advisedly attended on day one of the cleanse, and firmly believe that as this little juice shop grows into its own, the cleanses and stand-alone juices and mylks will leave a dent in the growing juice scene here in Toronto. I, personally, can’t wait to order more of Erin and I’s most beloved After Party and test out the efficacy of charcoal the next morning. – Eme
