Getting knocked-up doesn’t mean you have to hit the brakes on your exercise routine, but it might be time to look into a prenatal fitness regime. With that in mind, and with one of us having a (gluten-free) bun in the oven, we’re bringing you a series focusing on prenatal fitness classes around Toronto. Up this week: Moksha Yoga’s prenatal yoga series.
If you’ve ever been to a prenatal yoga class you may have noticed something startling: there is very little actual movement. In fact, your level of activity is closer to what you might find in a restorative class or say, a restless nap, than in a regular flow class. Which is why this active preggo was thrilled to find real, actual motion in the prenatal yoga series at Moksha Yoga.
Moksha offers a non-heated six-week series for mamas-to-be. We took two rounds and loved the fact that the upfront commitment meant that we would be moving with and getting to know a small group of other pregnant women throughout the series. We also loved that our instructors were mamas-to-be as well, meaning they knew in real-time what felt good for our bodies and what was perhaps a bit strenuous.
But the most appealing part of the series was the fact that while yes, there were plenty of restorative poses and hip openers (think lots of goddess pose), there were also adaptations of asanas we might see in an all-levels flow class. So we challenged our lower body with lunges, warrior poses, balancing poses, and chair pose, and even flowed through a modified vinyasa using a bolster. Our instructor gave us not only the direction to move through a prenatal class safely, but also a solid amount of modifications to use if we chose to pop into a non prenatal class.
We also love that Moksha provides options to pregnant women to take their regular classes by recommending they review a downloadable PDF of the Moksha sequence modifications. They also offer a pregnancy DVD for an at-home practice.
We took the series at Moksha Yoga Uptown (the next six-week series stars on January 9 and goes through February 13), but they are also offered at St. Clair West on Thursdays (January 4-February 8) and Sundays (January 7-February 11), and Thornhill (which also offers a Mom & Baby class), and may be available at other locations as well.
