“Dead.” With one word, Eme nicely summed up how our entire class felt at the end of an hour-long Orangetheory Fitness workout. For me personally, as I was sitting on the edge of a treadmill, watching my heart rate come down gradually on the television opposite me (more on that later), I couldn’t help but notice the amount of sweat literally dripping off my body. I mean, not to get too TMI, but I may never have sweat so much in my entire life. Orangetheory Fitness (the Danforth location) had delivered…and in a major way.
Orangetheory Fitness classes are set in an “orange-lit” room – the colour orange is meant to generate feelings of energy, vitality and health. Before class, our instructor took us newbies for a tour of the studio and walked us through the structure of the class. To be honest, we were a bit worried that we wouldn’t be able to keep track of what to do and when, especially on a Sunday morning during one of the biggest snowstorms of the year. But, through the excellent guidance of our coach and the television demonstrations at the weight station, we caught on almost immediately.
To begin with, the class was dived into two groups – rowing machines vs. treadmills. We ended up with the rowing crew. The relief at avoiding the treadmills was only briefly lived, believe me. For the next 30 minutes, we alternated between rowing intervals and strength training exercises. I swear I felt those single-leg TRX squats for DAYS after… Then, at 30 minutes in, you guessed it, we were told to rotate to a treadmill, where we would spend the next 30 minutes running intervals. Can somebody say “killer”?! Even as a runner, I was spent by the end of the treadmill portion. And my heart rate readings on the television (they give you a Mio Global heart rate monitor) told the same story. By the end of the class, we definitely felt like we had had an incredible total body workout – plus, we had completed both cardio and strength training in a super efficient and effective manner. Win-win.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the Orangetheory Fitness philosophy is the “Orange Effect” – their workouts are designed to give you more sustained energy in between workouts, promote visible toning and, last but certainly not least, have you burning extra calories for up to 36 hours post-workout. Orangetheory Fitness also generates major motivation in three brilliant ways – through the group class setting, via the encouragement and guidance of a dynamic instructor and, finally, by allowing you to track your own goals with your heart rate monitor by projecting your heart rate on televisions around the studio. Orangetheory Fitness is definitely a fitness phenomenon. And now we can see why.
