We’re all guilty at some point of simply going through the motions during a workout, of not being as present as we could be. That’s where Mindful Movement Centre comes in.
The studio is a hidden oasis located in the heart of Yorkville. The studio offers mat and reformer classes as well as a Dance Synergy class (dance meets mat pilates), essentrics, and yoga. There is a large room for mat classes, a designated area for private sessions, treatment rooms, and a reformer room, which has a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows, bringing in incredible natural light (so you can go #nofilter on your workout selfies). There are six reformers in the room so even with a full class, it feels like a semi private class.
We met our instructor Alyssa who asked us to be mindful of how our bodies were feeling on this particular day. When a few of us admitted to having some tightness, she assured us we would achieve a stretch along with the burn.
Our 45-minute class was a total body workout done on the reformer – an exercise device that relies on a series of springs to change the weight and difficulty of an exercise as you use straps or your legs to control its movement. The simplest movements on the reformer had us feeling the burn in the deepest of muscles. During the class Alyssa told us to add or remove springs based on our exercises. The small class size allowed Alyssa to adjust and assist everyone in the class multiple times.
Mindful Movement Centre was both a professional and welcoming studio. Our reformer class gave us a good workout glow, time to stretch our muscles and had us targeting glutes, core, triceps and back in a different way than in the weight room. During those 45 minutes, as we listened intently to Alyssa to know which muscles to target and how to make slight adjustments. We were mindful and present, and allowed ourselves the gift of movement – a lesson to take off the reformer as well.
