Stuck trying to decide which boutique studio to hit after work? Find a class that combines more than one workout to fully maximize your sweat time. We headed to the new Fort York location of Big Hit for the Corebox class to work on our one-two punch and target our core in a forty-five minute sweat sesh.
Big Hit, which now has five locations in the GTA and plans to expand to Vancouver and the U.S. in the near future, is known for hosting a variety of kickboxing and Muay Thai classes, and features the chance to take out some serious aggression on a “manlike punching bag.” Fondly known as “Bob,” the bag is something we haven’t had the chance to interact with at most other boxing studios. Being able to punch at a lifelike bag helped us get in tune with the position of our punches and visualize what actually boxing against someone would be like.
When we arrived at Fort York, members of the Big Hit staff instructed us on how to wrap our hands to help us learn to do it ourselves. The location has small lockers to secure your valuables, towel service to wipe the sweat, a filtered water fountain outside the exercise room and small cold face towels at the end of class to enjoy during the stretch. The workout room has “Bobs” lined on each side as well as mirrors behind “Bob” so you can watch your form during cardio sets. The padded floor added a great cushion for the jumping we did as well as when we hit the floor for our core sets.
Our class instructor provided ample opportunity for us to work on our kickboxing and boxing moves, while the core exercises (planks and crunches) helped us build overall strength. Class was fast paced and the multiple moves in each set challenged both our bodies and our minds. Cardio sets (jumping jacks and mountain climbers), were thrown in between kickboxing and punching sets to get the heart rate up and the sweat dripping.
