Hygge. You’ve read about it somewhere. You know someone who has comically mispronounced it (for the record, it’s hoo-gah). But you’re still not sure why you and all your friends are canceling plans in favour of a night under a cozy blanket at home. Blame the Danish.
So just what the heck is hygge?
Think of it as the wellness version of Netflix + Chill. Hygge is a Danish word that captures that feeling when you’re sipping wine with your friends, cozied up under a blanket, feeling comfortable and at ease – basically it takes us a lot more words in English to convey what the Danes do in one.
Hygge has, according Meik Wiking‘s book The Little Book of Hygge: The Danish Art of Living Well, “been called everything from ‘the art of creating intimacy’, ‘cosiness of the soul’ and ‘the absence of annoyance’ to ‘taking pleasure from the presence of soothing things’, ‘cosy togetherness’ and, my personal favourite, ‘cocoa by candlelight’.”
With temperatures colder than we can remember in Toronto, we’re embracing the warm, at-home, candlelit aspects of Hygge. Below are some of our favorite things to turn your home into a hygge haven.
Your Hygge Checklist
You’re gonna need a bigger blanket. Luckily, we found this chunky knit one on Amazon for you.
If you’re going to burn candles (and what’s more hygge than that?) make sure you’re not also slowly leaking harmful chemicals into the air. We recommend pure beeswax for the cozy glow without the cloying sent. We discovered this super cute Canadian company The Wicked Bee, which makes 100% beeswax stunners.
We also love everything Woodlot from out west in BC, who make all of their candles from natural coconut and soy wax. And their Rose & Palo room spray is the most amazing pre-bedtime spray ever.
OK so technically Palo Santo isn’t a total necessity for hygge living, but if you’re going to be maxin’ relaxin’ all cool in your cozy space for a while, shouldn’t you make sure the energy is properly cleansed first? You can pick up Palo Santo in a ton of places now but it’s important to work with a company that focuses on sustainability, which is why we love Palo Santo Supply Company.
It’s important to be comfy when you meditate in general but when you’re on a mission to make your home 100% hygge, you have to find the coziest options. Our love for Love My Mat – the company that repurposes fabrics to create totally one-of-a-kind products – has been documented on this site before, but we’ll just go ahead and give them a little more affection now too.
You can’t get cozy with cold feet. But you can find UGGs everywhere and they are so comfortable and cute. One of us even got a pair for her husband, who wears them all the time.
Enhance your chill with the gentle scent of essential oils wafting through your zen den. Saje Wellness makes our fave diffusers (and oils) in a variety of shapes, sizes, and functions.
Salt lamps are beloved for releasing negative salt ions to do everything from boosting blood flow, to improving sleep. And also for being really Instagrammable. Much like Palo Santo, these have become so in-demand (three cheers for the normalization of woo woo wellness!), that you can pretty much find them anywhere. But if you prefer to source yours from somewhere other than Bed Bath & Beyond, we found the Canadian company, Himalayan Salt Lamp Store (bonus points for the creative name).
There’s a reason so many #hygge photos involve clutching a steaming cup of tea. Warm bevvies are a big part of feeling cozy not just outside but inside too. Of course any tea will do, but we’re loving Toronto-based Lemon Lily for their handcrafted natural & certified organic loose leaf tea.
Much like tea, bone broth will help hygge you from the inside. And since you won’t want to leave the comfort of your ultra-cozy home, pick up a jar from Impact Kitchen and heat it up while you sit by the crackling fire (or watch the yule log channel on TV).
A Good Book
While you could totally watch a marathon of Friends or just stare at the walls, enhance your self-care vibes by reading a great book… or just perusing photos of homes that are way more hygge than yours.
Hygge is best when shared with friends. So call up your mellowest crew members and invite them over for a cozy night in. Just make sure they know the party is BYOS (Bring Your Own Slippers).
