Whether you’re an Ironman, a SoulCycle addict, or a yogi, chances are, you have set a few fitness goals for yourself. And while dedication and a plan of action are important elements in making those goals a reality, having a clear idea of where you’re starting may be the real key to success.
Toronto’s Body Insight, which opened late last year, is using hyper personal data – like body composition, shape analysis, metabolic testing, and VO2 Max testing – to give clients a leg up in reaching their health and fitness goals.
Putting Us to the Test
Among Body Insight’s services, are a few that provide a great baseline.
Body Composition testing allows you to know the precise breakdown of fat mass, muscle mass, and muscle distribution in your body. The test also allows you to find your levels of hydration and learn if any of these elements put your health at risk.
During the shape analysis, you’ll stand on a machine that scans and captures a 360 composite image of your body. The machine uses 3D scanning technology, to track how your body shape changes over time. The test also assesses posture and symmetry to detect imbalances and prevent injury.
Metabolic Testing allows you to know the exact number of calories your body requires at work and at rest, and helps give you an understanding of how long it would take to reach your ideal weight for a given daily caloric intake. During the test, you’ll sit in a cozy chair, breathing into a tube for 15 minutes to establish a baseline breathing rate.
VO2 Max Testing
VO2 Max Testing uses treadmill running to assess your cardiovascular health and establish levels of exercise intensity tailored to your training goals. The test allows you to understand the exact number of calories burned during exercise.
During the test, you’ll be hooked up to a heart rate monitor and equipped with a mask that covers the nose and mouth, with a tube that feeds results to a nearby computer. After the warm-up on the treadmill, the incline and speed will increase every minute and the Body Insight team will identify each stage of the process and share feedback and commands (like: you have more gas in the tank, keep pushing).
After the Testing
Post tests, your data will be printed out, and the team will review each page, explaining what the results mean and how to use them to achieve specific goals. At our appointment, the studio’s founder Martin Walker broke down our data and explained it in a way that we could understand in order to make the necessary changes to better our health and fitness.
Walker is knowledgeable, patient and non-judgemental, with a clear passion for finding data and using it as a guide to better health.
Whether you are a competitive athlete, a regular gym goer, or someone new to the fitness world, knowing where to find your own personal starting line can be the key to longterm success.
