Over here at WTD we are known to go really hard with our workouts. In our pursuit to bring you all the health and wellness glory that Toronto has to offer, we’ve been known to do two or three workouts a day sometimes. So, when the Firestarter session at Equinox was presented to me, I didn’t believe it would be a viable workout option. A 30 minute class? Please. How much could I sweat from that? I’m a seasoned sweat professional!
Consider me wrong and completely knocked out. I was sore for two days after that workout, and astonished at how much I could sweat in a mere 30 minutes.
Firestarter is a plyometric type class that takes HIIT to another intensity level. Firestarter is a branded Equinox class. Every Equinox gym in Canada and the U.S. does the same workout every week for a month to the same music and the same moves. On the first of each month, the workout changes.
Firestarter sessions are quick, fat-burning and fast-paced. You are constantly on the move, which is why the class goes by so quickly. Most of the workout is done on or around a step bench using your own body weight. The class is done around quick plyo and cardio moves in 15, 30 and 45 second intervals with a 30-second break. The classes fill up fast, and it seems to be a popular class with gym-goers.
As I later learned, the Firestarter class is often a prelude to the next class. I was surprised that a few participants stayed for the next fat-burning class (was I the only one ready for the couch?).
The music is great, and the energy in the room is amazing and upbeat. Everyone is there to work, and work you will!
