Week 2 of WTD’s Guide TO Fall features new WTD contributor and makeup artist Christine Jairamsingh of The Detox Market, an all natural beauty store helping customers to make the smartest investments in their health and beauty products. In Part 1 of this two-part fall beauty edit, Christine talks natural beauty, the latest make-up trends and updating your beauty routine for fall.
Well TO Do: Please introduce yourselves and The Detox Market to the Well TO Do readers (as if The Detox Market needs an introduction…).
Christine Jairamsingh: I’m Christine, the lead makeup artist for The Detox Market in Toronto. The Detox Market is an all natural beauty store that focuses on carrying a well-curated collection of the best-of-the-best in the natural beauty industry. This includes makeup, skincare, haircare, aromatherapy, and even products for internal health!
WTD: The Detox Market is all about natural beauty and skincare products – why do you think that it’s important for people to use natural beauty and skincare products?
CJ: We rely on our beauty and skincare products day in and day out, and what we put on our skin ends up in our bodies. I think it’s important to use as many natural products as possible as an investment in your overall health. It’s also much better for the environment, and more enjoyable to use. Trust me…the experience of using natural products is both nourishing and luxurious. You’ll start to look forward to washing your face and doing your makeup….even doing your laundry.
WTD: There still seems to be some skepticism about the effectiveness and quality of natural skincare and beauty products. Do you think that people can achieve the same skincare and beauty “look” results with natural product offerings?
CJ: Natural skincare and makeup has evolved immensely in recent years, and I find them to now be superior to conventional products. Nothing beats the glow from a natural highlighter. As a makeup artist, I am faced with the assumption that natural products are inferior daily. It’s all about understanding the textures of what you’re using and how best to apply it. I always say, natural makeup isn’t going to set and not move for a week if you don’t wash your face…which is a good thing! I think our infatuation with long wearing products has gone a little far. With proper skincare, blending, and a little setting powder, your makeup will be just as flawless, if not better.
WTD: With fall nearly upon us, talk to us about the latest beauty trends for fall.
CJ: My favourite beauty trend for fall is coral for the cheeks and lips. It’s a colour that’s usually featured for summer, but can look really beautiful year round. Pink/rose tones are a common go-to. It’s a nice way to switch things up.
WTD: What are the must have beauty buys and where do we start?
CJ: Skincare is everything. When people first come into the store, I almost always end up in a conversation about cleansers. It’s the first thing you put on your face, and can completely change the moisture-levels and surface of your skin. I love the Province Apothecary Moisturizing Cleanser + Make Up Remover for all skin types. Some other top sellers/ personal faves:
- Josh Rosebrook Hydrating Accelerator (Delightful anti-inflammatory mist that hydrates and can be used throughout the day.)
- Odacite Green Tea Lemongrass Serum Concentrate (Instant radiance!)
- May Lindstrom The Clean Dirt (I love using this as an exfoliator AND mask.)
- Laurel Organics Eye Serum (Feels super soothing and hydrating.)
- Hurraw Moon Lip Treatment Balm (Best balm ever!)
- The Beauty Chef Hydration Inner Beauty Boost (Beautiful skin also comes from the inside. This is an amazing product full of pre and probiotics for healthy digestion.)
WTD: If the WTD readers wanted to make just one change to their beauty routines with the most impact for fall, what should it be?
CJ: Incorporate a hydrating treatment at night. It’ll amp up your moisture levels, plump the skin, result in using less skincare during the day, your makeup will go on smoother, and you’ll be prepping your skin for winter. Try Odacite Deep Hydration Masque or Tata Harper Moisturizing Mask.
WTD: Rapid fire…ready?
- Dewy or matte? Dewy
- Lipstick or lipgloss? Lipstick
- Bronze or alabaster? Bronze
- Smoky or crisp? Smoky
- Bold eye or bold lip? Bold eye
WTD: What’s coming up for The Detox Market?
CJ: We are ever expanding our collection of products. Some very exciting brands are coming to the store. Also, existing lines are launching new products for fall (lots of new makeup!). We’re having a ton of events at our King St location, including mini facials and makeovers. Sign up for our newsletter on our website and/or follow our Instagram to find out about what’s coming up!
WTD: What’s exciting you most right now about the natural beauty scene?
CJ: The natural beauty scene is exploding! I’ve never seen so many fresh ideas and remarkable products come out in such a short period of time. Everyday I come across a brand I haven’t heard of, which I think is great. The quality, effectiveness and availability of natural products is on a level it’s never been at before.
WTD: Follow-up question…what’s exciting you most right now about the Toronto wellness scene?
CJ: I love how the Toronto wellness scene is integrated. It can be found everywhere, and is totally accessible to everyone, not just found in a certain part of town or circle. Ideas are flourishing and local products are finding so much success. It’s super exciting!
