Crystals: you’re pretty sure you love them, but not so certain you know much about them. Join us for a series with our friends at Happy Soul Toronto to learn the basics of these complex stones.
Celebrities are draping their necks, dotting their earlobes, and stacking their arms with them. High end jewelers are working them into pricey precious pieces. They’re being ground into a fine powder, mixed into beauty and skincare products, and snatched up by those in the know. Kim Kardashian’s new perfume bottle is shaped like one. Even your water can benefit from their presence.
But even if you’re ready to embrace them, it’s hard to know where to start. Which crystal is right for you? Do you to drop hundreds on a huge piece for your coffee table? Or place a few small pieces in your bedroom? How do you use a crystal? Do I really have to clean them?
For answers to our most pressing crystal questions, we headed to the dreamy Bloor West crystal shop, Happy Soul Toronto, and sat down with crystal expert and healer, Joey Wargachuk to get some answers.
First Things First: The History of Crystals
“Crystals have an amazing history,” explains Wargachuk. “For thousands and thousands of years and even predating history itself, shamans and storytellers incorporated them into the hero’s story. There’s always this great quest for the shining gem or crystal that would grant wishes or solve the hero’s problem or give them great power and strength. Shamans and sorcerers, and emperors’ advisors would bring them to the kings and leaders who would have their gems and crystals encrusted in their crowns and scepters.
“The ability to improve the energy and chakras of leaders was kept secret for hundreds of thousands of years until we fast forward to about 100 years ago, when semi-precious stones like amethysts and aquamarine start making their way into everyday culture in the 20s because of mass mining. Costume jewelry became popular and people began wearing semi precious stones because they were just as beautiful as gemstones but affordable.”
Crystals in Technology
Today, not only have crystals crossed over into the mainstream wellness world, they’re also indispensable to the world of technology.
“This is where mysticism and technology meet,” say Wargachuk. “About 60 years ago, they realized that if you put clear quartz into a capacitor under pressure, it vibrated so hard that it kept track of time. That’s how they track the ones and zeroes in a microchip. The crystal is oscillating so fast and so strong and so perfect, that’s the only way they can track a one and a zero. This discovery allowed us to go from analog computers the size of football fields to your smart phone that has a chip in it that’s being timed by a micro processor that’s a clear quartz crystal.”
Your LEDs, LCDs and solar panels? All powered by crystals.
What’s the Difference Between a Gemstone and a Crystal?
“The difference between crystals and gemstones is just the quality and quantity of the molecular structure purity. Seventy percent of the earth’s crust is clear quartz. It’s a silicate, carbonate, compound, but diamonds are pure 100% carbon and have the highest vibration [which is why they’re so much more rare and expensive]. So it’s about the clarity and rarity of the element.”
Getting Started: Choosing Your Crystals
Here’s where most of us get confused. Where do we even begin?
Happy Soul Toronto helps make the process a little easier by organizing the store’s vast array of crystals by chakras. Your chakras (there are seven of them and we’ll explore them more closely in our next installment) are connected to different hormonal glands throughout your body. Generally, your needs (inner peace, clarity, abundance) will correspond to a specific chakra.
Once you’ve found the stones that seem to fit your needs, owner Diane recommends spending time feeling the energy, the weight, and your gut reaction to various crystals and shapes to find the one that’s right for you. If that all seems a bit daunting though, the Happy Soul Toronto team is, well, happy to help you.
Wargachuk also suggests one of the stores pre-batched crystal sets as a great starting point.
The Most Popular Crystals at Happy Soul Toronto
“Lepidolite is the number one seller because people come in stressed and they want to deal with the noise,” explains Wargachuk. “Next is amethyst because people want a crystal about spirituality. It’s also the sobriety stone and it’s really aesthetically beautiful. Then there’s pyrite because living in Toronto is super expensive and pyrite helps in manifesting the things you want and it’s very connected to money. It’s an entrepreneurial stone.”
Should You Wear Your Crystal or Place it in Your Home?
“Usually we’ll ask people ‘what do you need?’ And then we can figure out whether that’s a crystal that they should be wearing or one they need in their home,” says Wargachuk. “Do they want to change the energy in their home or the energy within them?
Choosing The Best Crystals For…
Finding Love: “You need to find love with yourself first. Rose Quartz is great because it’s about self love and self care. But a lot of the times when people are trying to look for love they’re trying to heal a past relationship issues. Rhodo quartzite is the go to for healing all emotional traumas and wounds that come from the last relationship they were in that didn’t work.”
Staying Calm: Lepidolite
Healing: “A lot of this has to do with the heart chakra so malachite is about getting the gunk out of the heart and it’s also the travelers stone so it’s super protective. Malachite gets the negative energies that are making you feel icky out of your system. Allows you to open up the space and heal.”
Protection: “That’s a double edged sword because obsidian and labradorite are close. Labradorite banishes fear but obsidian expels anger and is very protective.”
Inspiration: “Always carnelian. It’s known for helping with creativity and flow and a burst of ideas.”
The Entrance of Your Home: Black obsidian or labradorite.
Where Do I Keep My Crystals?
Here’s a hot tip: if you’re like us and you’ve been keeping your stash of small crystals in one spot, you’re doing it wrong.
“A lot of people who are crystal collectors have little altars or a dish where they keep all their crystals and you should never do that.” explains Wargachuk. “A lot of crystals have different structures and different chakras and it’s a big harmonic cacophony mess. You should give your crystals space.”
Cue us scattering our crystals throughout our home.
“At Happy Soul Toronto, all the crystals are paired by color and structure so they all have space to breathe and do their thing. If you want calming energy put lepidolite and amethyst in the bedroom. If you want creativity and flow, put carnelian in your home office. If you want to make money, put pyrite and citrine in your office. If you’re a student and you need to focus you need fluorite to focus and a purple stone to get rid of the chaos that’s going on in your mind.”
