As the wellness market in Toronto becomes more and more saturated, watching the growth of a business that puts the community first is enough to make us stand up and take note. With a focus on cultivating community through events that highlight local artists, entrepreneurs, and wellness companies, ActifyCity has us hooked.
The company‘s first Toronto event, ActifyTO, held at The Gym at 99 Sudbury, was sort of a “choose your own fitness adventure.” When purchasing a ticket, we selected a local charity to benefit from a portion of our ticket sale. Next we chose between a HIIT workout by Carlos, or one of three different styles of yoga led by Karina Vee, Yogi Toronto, Jaffer Hussain, and Vtina Blumenthal. After opting for Karina’s yoga class, we could then select a post-workout perk: a post-yoga massage during savasana ro a 15-minute table massage by Registered Massage Therapy students.
We then picked one of the beautiful mats provided by We Ar One and put on our wireless noise isolating LED headphones to make the practice hyper personal. The Sound Off Experience made every spot in the class feel like we were right beside Karina front row and center.
Following our class, we had the chance to sit down with Brian, one of the cofounders of ActifyCity, to find out more about the company:
Please introduce yourselves and the concept of ActifyCity to the Well TO Do readers.
I have been teaching yoga for the last 10 years and practicing for 12. After years of mentally and physically empowering our local communities, I’ve decided to build a better foundation of knowledge and become a registered massage therapist. I’ve been exploring being an entrepreneur since I was 16 years old and we just had our first big event here in Toronto.
ActifyCity will hold large quarterly events each year that will focus on bringing together a community and showing them what options are available to them in their neighbourhoods. As the primary Canadian provider of the wearable technology, we utilize wireless noise isolating LED headphones that allow the participants to connect on a more personal level with the instructors and their music while tuning out all other distractions.
Eliminating all other ambient noise feels like you’re suddenly in this little cocoon. In a space full of people, the headphones allow you to do something most of us struggle with, you’re able to focus on yourself rather than others and calm your mind.
What type of workouts can be done with the LED Headphones?
It’s pretty amazing to try to test the limits of these headphones. At our last event we had HIIT, yoga, massages, and mini meditations. We will continue to practice yoga as our foundation and the other classes we’ve featured so far, but also start incorporating spin, dance, pilates, boxing, and reiki classes as well. We’re open to any suggestions, event collaborations, and ideas that the community may have! As we grow, we want to keep exploring more opportunities to bring to our participants.
When purchasing our tickets, we had the choice to support multiple local charities with a portion of our ticket fee. Why is teaming up with local charities important to you?
We understand that as a growing small business it’s important to set the tone in your business model and create something that truly represents who you want to be. Helping people is at the core of what we want to do. There are some incredible local charities and organizations in our city that are doing amazing things for the community. The idea that we could find a way to help support them and highlight all the great things they do was a very poignant realization in this process.
No matter how big or small the event that we’re creating, we want to make sure participants always feel good knowing they chose which organization they were going to help support with their presence. It helps us remember what’s really important when we’re creating these spaces, which is uplifting others around us through the community.
We loved the local marketplace during the most recent ActifyTO event. Please explain why you wanted to incorporate other Toronto startups and entrepreneurs into your event.
This city is full of talent and we’ve been truly inspired and supported by so many amazing startups and entrepreneurs around us. We wanted to give our participants the opportunity to meet some of them and see the amazing work they’re creating. With ActifyTO we saw an opportunity to create a community and our vendor village helps cement that. It can be a struggle when you’re starting to get your work and vision out there, so this created a place where can they bring it all together and share it with our lovely participants.
What do you have planned for the next ActifyCity event?
We’ve been dreaming of creating an outdoor space for our participants for quite some time now. Canadian spring weather is unpredictable so we felt it was perhaps something we should introduce a little later this year. We are exploring some really unique Toronto landmarks and spaces as our next venue but you’ll have to stay tuned for the big reveal! The workout will be focused on yoga and spin during the event with other opportunities for pilates, dance, meditation, and massage throughout.
We are always out in the community exploring and meeting people we want to feature as vendors. We welcome ideas so please feel free to reach out to us if you or a business you know would want to join us.
You’ll be able to find us popping up on a smaller scale at events this summer to allow people to explore what our classes look like. We’re aiming to have our next big event on the last weekend of September.
