Pro Tip: To make sure you actually leave the couch in this cold snap (we’re all about hygge but let’s strive for balance), find a killer workout that makes you pumped to pull on the athleisure and venture out for a workout. Enter: JBKB New Frontier Fitness, where we headed for a one-on-one with owner Jason Battiste.
After suffering a hand injury at age 31, Battiste, a former Canadian Super Middleweight Kickboxing Champion, retired from competitive fighting and turned to training. His new gym JBKB New Frontier Fitness allows him to train fighters and those new to the sport. With over 26 years of kickboxing history, Battiste has lots of experience in and out of the ring. He is also a course conductor for Fitness Kickboxing Canada as well as teaches certification courses and workshops.
Knowing about all of this experience, we were excited (albeit a little nervous) for our workout at JBKB New Frontier Fitness that would focus on MMA/kickboxing with functional movement exercises. Upon meeting Battiste, he did a quick pre-assessment to understand our boxing knowledge and then got us to work. We focused on technique, conditioning and finishing movements.
Our first circuit consisted of: punching using pads, bear crawl to wraps (one person moved inside the wrap with the wrap around their waist and tried to run while the other person provided resistance), bear crawl to ropes, and bear crawl to the finisher (fast punching on pads on the floor). We switched after each set so we had time to get our breath back and grab a sip of water.
We then moved on to another circuit using a slosh pipe (long plastic pipe filled with water) which forced us to focus on our core. To add an extra challenge, we had to balance on one foot while executing exercises using multiple muscle groups. As we began to tire at the end of our sets, Battiste kept us motivated by reminding us that this is where real fighters are made, and instead of slowing down, we should finish strong.
As we ended our session with Battiste, the next group class was on their way in. Amazingly enough, they cheered us on to finish our workout as they wrapped their hands in preparation for theirs. This type of encouragement speaks to the community that has been created atJ BKB New Frontier Fitness. Many members have worked out together for years but welcomed us and complimented us on finishing our first New Frontier workout. We left feeling energized (and a little bit exhausted).
