As we enter into the era of legalization, Well TO Do is launching Cannabis Conversations, a series focusing on our shifting opinions on the substance, its place in the wellness world, conscious consumption and more.
Up first, our interview with dosist (which sadly won’t be available in Canada just yet – more on that below), one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies, that has created a pen designed to deliver a precise dosage of one of their wellness-focused formulas. We talked to their Senior Vice President in Canada, Lenny Louis, about Canadian legalization, the role of cannabis in fitness, how cannabis fits into a wellness-focused lifestyle, and more.
With legalization coming soon to Canada, there’s of course a lot of conversation around safe and conscious consumption. How do you think dosist is a part of that dialogue?
dosist has launched an advocacy campaign urging the Canadian government to swiftly legalize and regulate cannabis concentrates and vape pens. The campaign focuses on the therapeutic benefits of dose-controlled cannabis delivery, using the line “Not Available in Canada.” The communications are supported by a call to action rallying Canadians to email their MPs.
As well, dosist just held a 10 day wellness pop-up experience, from September 8- 16, in the heart of downtown Toronto designed to educate and empower Canadians to naturally manage their own health and happiness. It included complimentary programming such as panel discussions with special guests and industry thought leaders on timely topics ranging from coping with anxiety to women’s sexual health and interactive activities in collaboration with like-minded brands such as guided meditation and fitness classes.
In one interview, the CEO of dosist talked about the brand’s focus on mitigating the intoxicating effects of cannabis. How does dosist do that and why do you think that’s important?
dosist focuses on providing a consistent and repeatable experience with cannabis-based therapy – which can be difficult with plant based medicine. It requires a two pronged approach – consistent formulations of the active ingredients in the plant and a delivering a consistent volume of those ingredients. The latter is where the dose pen comes in.
The dose pen by dosist is designed specifically to deliver a precise 2.25 mg dosage of our formulas ensuring a reliable, safe and consistent experience each and every time. This is guaranteed through three key features: optimized temperature control, controlled airflow and time control —even vibrating when you have taken a full dose.
dosist was named one of Fast Company‘s Most Innovative Companies in the health category in 2016. It wasn’t all that long ago that you wouldn’t hear the words “health” and “cannabis” in the same breath, let alone the same category. Why do you think we’ve come around to associating cannabis with achieving good health versus harming your health?
The history of cannabis goes back many thousands of years, making the plant one of humanity’s oldest cultivated crops. As recently as the early 1900s, cannabis was regularly prescribed by doctors across the Americas for pain relief and to treat neuropathy. Although political issues later resulted in the ban of its use and sale, the plant has remained a widely used alternative to prescription medication around the world, and support for its legalization— bolstered by recent scientific studies—continues to grow. People have now gotten back to the roots of cannabis, recognizing it again as a form of medicine and tool for treating a vast amount of conditions.
Let’s talk terpenes and the entourage effect. Can you tell us a bit more about this including how Dosist includes select terpenes in each strain? We know this is also where CBD comes into play – can you speak to that as well?
Each formulation’s unique terpene makeup plays a meaningful role in taking you to the specific needstate you want to reach. dosist’s formulations were developed based on available research and our science team’s intimate understanding of cannabis and its compounds. dosist blends consist of a terpene profile informed by mother nature, but in higher concentrations than what’s found in the whole plant. By pairing the terpene blend with a complementary cannabinoid ratio and heating the oil at an intelligent pace to a set temperature, you get a dose of relief, bliss or calm with every inhale.
When we talk about cannabis and wellness, generally the conversation revolves around CBD because it’s non-psychoactive and therefore maybe a bit easier for your average yogi to think about incorporating into their lifestyle. But the message around Dosist is that cannabis itself (including the THC) can be a part of a healthy lifestyle as well. Can you speak to that?
CBD and THC work together in order to derive the best benefits from each other. We incorporate the full spectrum of the plant because the THC and CBD elements in cannabis are proven to be effective both in helping the mind relax and promote focus and energy which, ultimately, helps achieve .
Will Dosist be arriving here in time for October 17?
We do applaud the Canadian government for moving forward to provide accessibility to recreational cannabis across the country however, bill C-45 soon to be called The Cannabis Act excludes concentrates and vaporizers and therefore denies access to the most critical tool for safe, consistent cannabis use: dose control. Thus, dosist will not be available in Canada on October 17.
The Toronto Dosist popup pop-up was packed with a variety of fitness classes. One thing we’re particularly interested in when it comes to cannabis is how it fits into fitness. How do you see consumption fitting into a fitness regimen?
Based on the type of workout, cannabis can be used before or after practice. [dosist] formulas such as “relief” can be beneficial after an intense workout to aid in muscle recovery, whereas “bliss” or “calm” have been shown to aid the mind in concentration before a low intensity workout such as yoga.
