While we love a good trendy workout, sometimes the best workout is the kind that gets back to basics. Located in Leslieville, Primal Movement offers a little bit of everything – open memberships, team training classes, small group training, personal training, bootcamps, yoga and, kickboxing – while sticking to the kind of workouts proven to get results.
The wide open space includes a turf area, treadmills and a mix of dumbbells and kettlebells, while a side room offers additional exercise equipment for open gym time. The yoga and kickboxing room is downstairs in the warehouse space and a garage door can be left open in the warmer months to allow in fresh air and sunlight.
Our bootcamp class began with a group warm-up in which we completed various exercises in a loop, including running, side shuffle, and butt kicks. The main workout was structured as an AMRAP (As Many Reps As Possible) and included three stations – dumbbell thrusters and pull ups, skipping and sit ups, and kettlebell swings and push ups – with 10 minutes spent at each one. Following each station, we had a one-minute break to grab some water and get ready to begin again.
We liked the simplicity of the bootcamp workout. The workout was written on the white board for easy access and the exercises were approachable for anyone coming into the gym and attending the class. It would be easy to modify or challenge yourself based on your ability, to take things easier as a beginner or break a serious sweat and put in an intense effort as a more experienced athlete. The classes are kept small, allowing the trainers to move through the room and make corrections or offer modifications to make movements easier or harder.
Primal Movement proves that you don’t need all the bells, whistles, and technologically advanced equipment to get a killer workout.
Primal Movement currently has a 7-Day free trial offer which includes access to the entire schedule of classes. Find Primal Movement on Instagram at @primalmovement. Check out primalmovement.ca for information on their classes.
