Campfires. S’mores. Bunk bonding. The ropes course. If any of that made you feel nostalgic for days spent at summer camp, you’re going to love Camp Fuel.
An adult summer camp weekend centered around the concept of a totally accessible (read: not bank-breaking) fitness retreat, Camp Fuel combines workouts (think everything from HIIT to low impact stretch) with an opportunity to get out of the concrete jungle and meet new people.
Founder Alicia Wood worked in TV production before an epiphany of her love for fitness led her to ditch the nine-to-five. When she’s not running Camp Fuel, she’s teaching or taking classes at Elle Fitness or Studio Lagree.
“I love helping people realize how amazing they are and find strength where they didn’t know they had it,” she tells us. “My job is to motivate and encourage people, which I’m not sure many people can say.”

We love the idea of an adult summer camp with the fitness twist. Where did you come up with the idea for Camp Fuel?
I love the idea of a fitness retreat. I always search for them when I go on holidays, but they’re often too expensive or only focus on one discipline. I wanted to start something that was local enough that you could drive to, but far enough that you come home feeling refreshed while not breaking the bank.
Tell us a little about what community means to you and why it is so important.
I have struggled with making new friends over the years. If I didn’t meet someone at work or at school it wasn’t really easy to ask him or her to hang out. Even when I’m hitting the gym day-in and day-out and seeing the same people, I find it awkward to say, “Hey, we should hang out sometime.” I wanted to create an easy atmosphere for people to connect. Camp Fuel is all about meeting new people and forming new bonds that could last a lifetime.
What kinds of activities can we expect over the course of the weekend in Muskoka?
We’re bringing fitness in all its forms to Camp Fuel. We’ll have everything from high intensity classes to low impact stretch classes. We also have a bit more creative freedom at camp so we can use our surroundings in ways that we aren’t able to inside a gym. Why not lift canoes or rocks instead of dumbbells?
We will also have all of the camp activities that you remember from when you were a kid: high ropes, canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding, a rock climbing wall, and so much more. Camp Fuel above all else is about having a great time. If a great time for you is sweating all day in various classes and activities, amazing! If it’s soaking up the sun while hanging out on the dock, perfect. No matter what, the best way to end any day is sitting around a campfire with friends.
It takes a village to put these kinds of things together. How did you go about finding like-minded teachers and trainers to take part in the Camp Fuel weekend?
I am so lucky to have some of the greatest colleagues in Toronto. I really wanted to find instructors that exude positivity and have a really inclusive vibe in their classes. The instructors we have on board are all amazing in different ways. They’re going to bring a well-balanced array of classes to Camp Fuel.
